Feather Dusters: 25 years in the making

For the last 25 years, the Geelong Feather Dusters have gathered at the Sir Charles Hotham Hotel to commemorate their time in the police family.

Pioneered by veterans John Howes, Sep Hermstrong and Allen Drought, the Feather Dusters was born out of a need for camaraderie following a life in the job.

Greg Moore, a former Detective Senior Sergeant at the Werribee C.I.B, became a silent partner of the Hotham with wife Sandra as the Geelong Police Station was being built.

Moore says “having a copper involved” was integral to making the Hotham a police watering hole.

Following John Howes’ retirement from the Force in 1995, Hermstrong and Drought along with Howes had their first Feather Dusters meeting; something that would continue for 25 years.

“We have a large number of members who retired down to the Surf Coast, Werribee or who move to Geelong and hear about the lunches,” Moore says.

All members are welcome, and it is just a matter of turning up on the day.”

Karl David, president of The Police Association, was in attendance in the December luncheon following a substantial donation to the club.

It’s something Moore says was fitting, following 25 years of meetings.
